Play Date @ Pete's is opening up its submissions process for the first time ever!
Deadline for all submissions = March 1, 2018
Attention Playwrights: That's right: we want to read your plays. Well, not the whole thing. We want to read 5-10 page samples of your plays, and then we want to give you a gorgeous public venue to have your plays read! So, if you're working on a play and you're interested in having it read publicly sometime in the next nine months, here's what we'd like you to do:
First, send us a 5-10 page sample of the brand new play you'd like to have read. Whether it's the first 5-10 pages or the last doesn't matter-- just choose the 5-10 pages that you feel best represent the work you're doing. We accept plays in all stages of development. Do not send us a synopsis or cover letter. We won't read it.
Second, let us know if there are any months in 2018 when you won't be able to have your play read at Pete's.
That's it. That's all we need from you, aside from your contact information.
Attention Directors: We want you to apply, too! The call is the same as the playwrights’: a 5-10 page sample of the brand new play you'd like to have read. We’ll also ask you to confirm that you are applying with the enthusiastic consent of the playwright.
Attention Everyone: We are also accepting proposals for non-reading events! Got a round-table discussion you’ve been wanting to put on? A cocktail mixer for all the greatest theater artists you know? A facilitated political rage session? We’re all ears! Please submit a 200-word description of your event.
What will Play Date provide? If your play or event is selected for a Play Date reading, you'll get a public reading or event at one of the most respected venues in Williamsburg, Brooklyn: Pete's Candy Store. (Readings and events are always on Monday nights, from 6:30-8:30pm.) You'll also get 90 minutes of rehearsal/read through/prep time at Pete's, directly before your performance. If you need help finding actors, directors, or panelists for your reading or event, Play Date will also help with that.
All readings must have a director.
We cannot provide rehearsal space beyond the 90 minutes, the day of your performance. But we can offer suggestions for (relatively) affordable places to rent rehearsal space.
Plays premiered at Play Date have gone on to have productions at The Bushwick Starr, The Drawing Center, The Exponential Festival, The Secret Theatre, University Settlement, The Found Festival, Verso Loft, and elsewhere. We look forward to reading your work!
